Ford Excursion
It's 19 feet long, six-and-a-half wide and has a wheelbase of more than 11 feet. On the civilian market you won't be outsized, and buyers told us they liked that. While the market mutates into crossover vehicles, the Excursion took the truck end of the spectrum and kept going.
That's what the owners say they wanted. Size matters to them. Excursion buyers liked the seating for up to nine adults or space for 165 cubic feet of stuff. The interior comes loaded with most anything a family could want: There are five separate power points, two sets of map pockets in the doors, 10 cupholders and more head-, shoulder-and legroom than an outdoor rock concert.
With a choice of two mighty V8s (5.4-liter Triton and 7.3-liter Power Stroke diesel) and a V10 available, neither owners nor testers complained about torque. Our test vehicle came with the 6.8-liter gasoline-fed Triton V10, which Ford says is in 70 percent of all Excursions.
The 6.8-liter makes 310 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque, which is good for towing. While torque serves you well on long uphill slogs, at the drag strip it's about horsepower. When you put those 310 horses into a 7190-pound Excursion, the results aren't impressive. Our Excursion could manage only a 10.23-second 0-to-60-mph time. Most big SUVs we've tested were quicker.
And while you won't be outsized in an Excursion, you will be outmaneuvered. In our slalom and skidpad tests the mighty behemoth felt every one of its more than three-and-a-half tons. Our test vehicle turned in just about the worst slalom speed we've ever recorded (34.8 mph) and had a rough time doing it. The Excursion's mass simply overwhelms its springs and shocks. The Excursion did no better around our skidpad, pulling only 0.67 gs and exaggerating every bump in the pavement.
Blame it on the Super Duty truck roots. The Super Duty platform is designed to handle heavier loads in the bed and on the trailer hitch than the light-duty platform on which Expedition sits, but it gives up handling-and garageability. Ford says the Excursion fits into most garages, but it was too tall for our building's parking structure.
A notable difference between the Excursion and Ford's smaller SUVs was the absence of luxury-car-like appeal. Some Excursion owners were disappointed by the fit-and-finish. Weld seams, paint overspray and plastic and velour interior touches are more truck than Town Car.
The truck is extremely quiet when up to speed and the seats are very comfortable. It's a great vehicle for long trips. The switches are located logically and the seats are comfortable. Visibility is better than expected in all areas. It's bigger inside than my first apartment and it will haul more friends than I've got. I like the big-truck look. It's still unique enough that people look and point, even if they are laughing. People are more polite at four-way crossings and it looks good at all angles. Might is right.
