STRETCHED

There is little doubt that adding five inches to the length of a vehicle will increase rear legroom.

What is in doubt is how much the extra length and weight will do to the performance of the vehicle.

Well, if the vehicle happens to be one of Jaguar's new, long-wheelbase XJ8s, the answer is not much. Not much at all.

"The long-wheelbase models add another dimension to the XJ lineup," said Ian Callum, director of design for Jaguar. "These vehicles were designed from the outset to be long-wheelbase cars. Therefore, the 'stretch' seems natural in the styling and feel of the car.

"It's the largest Jaguar ever built, providing customers with unsurpassed cabin space while maintaining high levels of luxury and performance, as one would come to expect from a Jaguar."

The main reason for no appreciable loss of performance from the Jaguar XJ8 is that the extra five inches adds a mere 53 pounds to the overall weight of the vehicle. Jaguar was able to accomplish that because the car has an all-aluminum body that is put together with space technologies, such as self-piercing rivets and adhesive bonding.

Drivers of a long-wheelbase Jaguar will find a comfortable, supportive seat. Drivers also will find that all controls are well placed and easy to use.

Those who don't like to ask for directions or read maps can shell out a few extra bucks for the optional navigation system.

For the most part, everyone thought Jaguar had done a better-than-average job on the interior of the long-wheelbase lineup of Jaguars. The one and only complaint was about cup holders. For those who can live without having a drink with them at all times, the cup holders will not be a problem.

And besides, the design of a cup holder should not be the main reason to buy or not buy a vehicle.

Besides additional leg- and headroom to make rear-seat passengers more comfortable and productive, long-wheelbase Vanden Plas and Super V8 Jaguars come with fold-down business trays. These are large enough to support a notebook computer, which can be powered by an auxiliary socket.

To keep rear-seat passengers who aren't using a laptop from asking, "Are we there yet?" an entertainment option is available that includes two 6.5-inch LCD screens built into the front seat headrests. The screens can be used to watch DVDs or play video games.

To keep out the sun or prying eyes, there are pull-up sunscreens in the rear windows, along with an optional power rear-window sunscreen.

Should the front passenger seat be empty, rear passengers sitting on the passenger side can increase their legroom by moving the front seat forward with their own set of controls for the front seat. The controls are mounted on the side of the rear seat.

People purchasing a long-wheelbase Jaguar will have a choice of two power plants. The tamer of the two is a 4.2-liter V-8 engine that produces 294 horsepower.

This engine should have more than enough power for most people. Those wanting a true wildcat under the hood can opt for the supercharged version of the engine, which gives the driver 390 horsepower to unleash upon the open road.

According to Jaguar, the nonturbocharged 4.2-liter V-8 can go from zero to 60 in 6.3 seconds, with the supercharged version covering the same distance in five seconds flat.
